Weymouth 1XI vs Gillingham 1XI
5th December 2015

The winner of this fixture would go second in the league. Gillingham were also keen to put last weeks disappointing result behind them but they knew Weymouth would be a tough proposition.

Although their were to be no excuses today, it has to be said that the day didn’t start well with the Dorchester to Weymouth road being closed due to an accident. After the inevitable cross country detour the team assembled late (minus our captain) and warmed up quickly on the days bouncy carpet. Five minutes to go, only 10 players and still no Snoopy! Time to unleash the secret weapon- coach Andy!

Weymouth started well and were immediately finding space in dangerous areas. An early short corner, luckily found its way to their centre forward who smacked the ball across Greg and into the bottom corner. Not a great start! 1-0.  After 5 minutes our inspirational skipper arrived but it did nothing to halt the home teams lust for a second goal. A long ball in from wide found their best player on top D. He turned and placed his reverse shot just inside the post. 0-2.   Gillingham started to create chances of their own but were also guilty of giving away another short corner and bang! Goal number three. The striker’s hat-trick – 0-3. It was all going wrong!

You have to take your chances in this league and Weymouth were doing just that. As the half time came, inspirational words from our coach and Bubba were needed, and the Gillingham troops were ready to fight back.

The second half saw Gillingham have the most of the ball, create lots of chances and have numerous short corners. They dug deep and showed lots of commitment, even if on occasions this manifested itself in (harsh) cards. OT, Steve, Chris and Snoopy all unlucky to take forced breaks during the game. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t to be. The blues were simply not clinical enough with their passing and shooting, and the Weymouth keeper was fantastic. Final score 0-3.

A day to forget, so beer, soup and home via those country lanes. Big game next week.
