Hampshire Trophy Semi-Final

Apr 11, 2015

This was a game that all were waiting for, GHC 2nd XI v GHC 3rd XI in the semi final of the Trophy, for a fixture in the final on Bank Holiday Monday May 4th in Haslemere. The game started with some pressure from the 3rd XI who were well up for the game only to find a Mike Osborne goal blunt there efforts, this was made even worse when Chris Dean scored a second,  and even more when 3-0 as Patrick Legg scored from a short corner. This didn’t reflect the chances that were created by both teams and the score could have been 4-2 at half time. The second half was fairly calm until a short corner won by the 3rd XI was put away by Dan Knight with an excellent strike, then two minutes later Gary Stevens finished off a scramble in the circle, 3-2 and not over yet. The final goal and almost from the pushback came again from Patrick Legg, quick free hit in the 23yd from Charlie Franklin and finished with a shot in the far corner. Good result and a very good game. Good luck 2nd XI in the...

Mens 3rd XI v Lavant 1st XI

Mar 25, 2015

There was nothing on this game apart from pride, and the opening ten minutes were all GHC as two goals were scored. They relaxed and Lavant got back into the game, the final score was 4-3 to the visitors. Well played the 3rd XI, great season just failing at the end to win promotion, next year!

Mens 3rd XI v Salisbury 3rd XI

Mar 15, 2015

After the disappointment of missing on promotion the only thing left for this brave 3rd XI was to go and beat Div. 5 side Salisbury and add it to the two other Div. 5 scalps. The game started with cut and thrust from both sides but GHC should have taken the lead early on. The pressure was building on the Salisbury goal and it was from a break away that a penalty stroke was awarded, defender lying on the ball. Up strode Paddy Legg and on the third attempt managed to find the goal. 1-0 and half time. Salisbury came out strong and moved the GHC team about, winning a few short corners of which one beat Leggs to make it 1-1, and penalty strokes looming. This happened and basically GHC scored all 5 to Salisbury’s 4, they hit the post. Next round semi final clash against very local rivals Gillingham 2nd XI on the 12th...

Feb 8, 2015

a home game on the GHC astro, as usual a little bit of frost and the game was in doubt, the ladies game was called off earlier but with team mule pulling the sledge the top surface was cleared. With a couple of players missing due to illness the side was strengthened by the returning Hugh Freese and it was him who opened the scoring on the 17th minute, the earlier exchanges had been dominated by GHC but the keeper was playing well, the young Winchester side, with the aid of a couple of senior players held out. the second goal came straight from the pushback, well finished by Patrick Legg, then Chris Dawson Bishop scored two, his second a volley on the far post that hit the post, then keeper, then went over the line. half time and cruising 4-0 the second half was very similar except the fifth goal came from the pushback, I timed it at 52 seconds when Freese reverse stick strike hit the net. The ever improving James Phillips then got in on the act, two goals to make it a final score of 7-1 with the WHC side scoring a lucky goal on the break.   this win keeps the side on the top of the league and now looking like a two horse race with Portsmouth...

mens 3rds v romsey 2nd xi

Feb 1, 2015

Gillingham Hockey Club 3rd team from Division 8 of the open League drew Romsey 2nd Xi from Division 5 in the cup, typical FA cup situation and this lived up to expectations. From the off GHC didn’t give Romsey any space, closed down at every opportunity  and creating problems in the D, which poacher Gary Stevens pounced upon with a cheeky reverse stick flick. 1-0 and a deserved lead. The second came from a team goal, nobody knows who actually scored it but who cares, 2-0 at half time. The second half started in dramatic style, Rob Browning plucking out from mid air a goal bound shot, Steve Rendell was just awesome in goal. Romsey got one back but in the end with the support from the side-lines GHC held out for a memorial 2-1 win. As mentioned Steve Rendell was just outstanding, keeping GHC in the penalty stroke shoot out v Fordingbridge and now this game the 3rd XI could go all the...

Jan 31, 2015

This was programmed to be a tough match with the results from the previous weeks taken onto consideration but in the end a fairly if not slightly bum clenching 4-1 win followed. The game started with GHC passing the ball around really well, 1-0 up in six minutes with a fine Chris Dawson-Bishop tap in, not sure what happened then, compliancy set in, took it too easy, running with the ball but remained 1-0 till have time Second half started and Ollie Hewitt finished a short corner routine with a sneaky little flick, 3-1 up when Olie Racey scored from another short corner drag flick but then F & E got back into it with a lucky goal. the fixture was put to bed when a well worked attack left Richard Swain in front of goal to flick over the keeper. Top of the table and promotion...

mens 3rd xi v trojans 6th xi

Jan 17, 2015

Gillingham were on a high following last weekends games and welcomed the Trojans 6th Xi to GHC. The game started with both sides playing nice hockey but it was the Gillingham side that opened the scoring from a short corner that was struck firmly home by Dan Knight. Not sure what happened then but the squad of 16 all went to sleep at the same time and Trojans got 2 goals taking the lead into half time. GHC then showed why they are pushing for promotion, it was helped by a Trojans player who seemed to loose the plot, Chris Dawson Bishop got the first, taking the ball of the end of Gary Stevens stick, and Stevens then got the winner. The dying minutes were all Gillingham but no more scoring so good 3-2 win and with Portsmouth Sharks loosing 2-1 GHC are now top of the league....

Mens 3rd xi v fordingbridge 1st xi

Jan 14, 2015

This was the 3rd XI’s first game in the Hampshire trophy competition, drawn against Fordingbridge 1st xi who are three leagues above but with confidence brimming over from the Saturday win anything was on the cards. The game started, one minute in and a nasty incident involving a ball, a stick and a finger-you can guess which one came off worse. Tom Milligan was the recipient of a lifted ball, tried to fend off and in fact had his finger smashed. The game was halted whilst emergency first aid was applied, ambulance rung and then cancelled, umpires Steve Way deciding that a trip in the flying machine would be quicker than waiting. Having dropped Tom off at A&E and returning to pitch side the GHC side were 2-0 up, only for that to quickly disappear as the Fordingbridge team at last started to pass the ball. they got two quick goals which then spurred the GHC side back into action, there were attempts at both ends but the final whistle went-penalty strokes to follow. up steps man of the match Steve Rendell who saved two putting the visitors through to the next round, at home to Romsey 2nd XI on the 1st...

Jan 14, 2015

Gillingham 3rd XI are now beginning to play some nice hockey, with the return of some players and a squad now bursting at the seams things look good for the rest of the season. Gillingham started at a fast pace and with in 15 minutes were 3-0 up, can only remember (with constant reminders) that the first goal was scored by Niall Willis, fierce strike from the right hand side. Final result was 5-0 with some great inter linking play, I think Charlie Adlam has found his position in midfield.

mens 3rd xi v haslemere 4th xi

Dec 2, 2014

This contest was between 3rd placed Gillingham and 4th placed Haslemere, bright and actually too warm for hockey but the opening 10 minutes were all one sided as the GHC side scythed Haslemere to pieces with Jake Cannings scoring two fine team goals. HHC got back into it with a goal of there own and it was 2-1 at half time. Enter the new scoring phenomenon that is ex footballer Gary Stevens, scored a well taken hat trick with HHC getting one back from a short corner but the game was never in doubt.
