ladies 1st xi v bournemouth 2nd xi

Nov 23, 2014

GHC Ladies 1st XI were playing high flying Bournemouth 2nd XI at Gillingham School, showers were expected but actually stayed dry. The game started as usual with a complaint from the BHC captain, they wanted the football goals moved from behind the hockey ones as there forwards could get confused, the determined umpires turned a blind eye as couldn’t see (sorry about the pun) anything wrong! The game started with some good movement and in the opening encounters GHC gave as good as they got, it was in the seventh minute that a Bournemouth attacker found the net. it stayed 1-0 till half time with the GHC side playing some nice hockey, it looked like GHC had got an equaliser when a ball fired in from the left appeared to touch Ruby Ellis’s stick and go in but turned out it was the defenders, why take away the OG rule!! The second half was similar in more ways that one as the 2nd Bournemouth goal came in the 7th minute! The GHC girls never gave up and had a couple of good routine short corners kicked away by the keeper and in the 20th minute the game was wrapped up when Bournemouth scored a third. GHC, ladies you played really well, just unlucky at times, play like that against Devizes next week and you will bring home 3...

ladies 1st xi v west wilts 1st xi

Oct 6, 2014

Waking up to a cold and wet miserable morning, Gillingham ladies 1st XI were all set raring to go to take on West Wilts. West Wilts finished 3rd in east league last year so we believed that it would be a tough one. Gillingham were out of the blocks quickly and had a very attacking first 20 minutes, scoring all 4 goals. The first goal was a beautiful goal from Ruby Ellis who deflected the ball into the top corner of the goal, much to her astonishment! Millie Lewis scored the next goal and Burt scored the remaining 2. West Wilts were determined not to give up and so throughout the rest of the match, they scored their 2. Hannah Feltham was close to scoring goal number 5 after making an excellent run from our defensive 25 but disappointingly, the ball hit the post. Eggy had an excellent game in goal saving our bacon on a few occasions. MOTM went to Luci H for another excellent game in defence and DOTD went to Ruby Ellis for her classic ‘Ruby’ reaction when she scored. Really well done to the team! We’re playing some really fab hockey and are currently placed 2nd in the league. Bring on next...

ladies 1st xi v frome 1st xi

Sep 28, 2014

The ladies started the league season this weekend with a home game against a spirited Frome side in Division East after winning promotion last year. The game started with Frome in control but soon the GHC ladies started to create chances but the goalkeeper was in fine form especially with her feet kicking all away. The breakthrough came in the first half when a defender in the Gillingham side failed to clear the lines and a looping shot went past Gemma Fair in goal. Gillingham created lots of chances with the speed of Sophia Wollard and Millie Lewis causing the defence problems and it was Sophia Wollard that equalised with a little flick over the keeper. 1-1 at half time. the second half was basically more of the same but GHC pressurized and from a short corner Millie Lewis found the corner of the goal. Good performance and three...

ladies 1st xi v bournemouth 4th xi

Mar 24, 2014

A comprehensive 10-0 victory over Bournemouth consolidated Gillingham Ladies 1st X1 position at the top of the table. Gillingham maintained control of the game from start to finish and dominated possession leaving the opposition with little opportunity to counter attack. Bournemouth never gave up and despite the score line they continued to play hockey in a great spirit. Katie Lee joined the usual scorers having made the “long trip” from right back. One game remaining with Gillingham three points clear at the top of the table and a goal difference some 22 goals higher than the second place team should see Gillingham gain promotion into the East League. Well done to all the team and thanks to Katie Ridewood for all her support and coaching. Thanks also to the many supporters who took time to come along and cheer us on. MOTM went to Ruby Ellis and Katie Lee who both had an excellent game and DOTD went to Luci Hooper for her gymnastics routine and picture posing throughout the match. Squad:  Gemma Fair, Katie Lee, Luci Hooper, Lucy Lloyd, Dee Webb, Jenny Woodward, Ruby Ellis, Sophia Woollard, Lou Court, Millie Lewis, Michelle Burt, Hannah Feltham, Asia...

Ladies 1st xi v beaminster 1st xi

Mar 2, 2014

A game of blood, sweat and tears. Gillingham ladies showed perseverance, determination and excellent team spirit. Gillingham were at times playing 11 v 10. Sometimes the decisions do not go our way. With 2 yellow cards, 1 green card and a whole team green card to come out with a 2-2 result Gillingham did really well! It was a day of records for Gillingham ladies, it’s unfortunate it had to be the number of cards received! At the start of the match, Beaminster looked the stronger team. They were quicker to the ball and looked like they wanted it more than Gillingham. Beaminster were 2-0 for the majority of the match. Katie Ridewood then made a tactical change which helped. It wasn’t until the last 20 mins that Gillingham fought back and scored both of our goals with 10 men (ladies!!). Jenny Woodward scored our first goal, which definitely up lifted Gillingham players and the Gillingham side came alive! The second goal came from Millie Lewis with a great sweep from the left hand post into the right hand corner. A 2-2 draw was not the result that Gillingham wanted to come away with, but we were all happy with the result under the circumstances. The team did b***** well!! We must continue to play with passion and conviction as soon as the whistle blows! Come on Gillingham, we can do this! MOTM went to Ruby Ellis who had an excellent game and DOTD went to Lou for her yellow card even though Lou had a great game! Squad: Eggy Fair, Katie Lee, Luci Hooper, Lucy Lloyd, Dee Webb, Jenny Woodwood, Ruby Ellis, Sophia Woollard, Lou Court, Izzy Allfrey, Asia Ellis, Hannah Feltham, Millie Lewis, Michelle...

Ladies 1st v Bournemouth 3rd XI

Jan 21, 2014

Gillingham ladies 1s had a crucial match to play this Saturday.  We played 2nd in the league, Bournemouth 3s, who are chasing us, only 2 points behind.  We either needed a win or a draw to remain at the top of the table.   Hannah Feltham scored in the first half with a beautifully placed sweep into the right hand corner.  Bournemouth came back fighting after this and at half time the score was 1-1.  Bournemouth put a lot of pressure on our defence which Katie, Luci, Dee, Rachel and Lucy handled in a calm and composed manner.  However, there were moments of madness where Gillingham kept the spectators on the edge of their seats.  Bournemouth scored again keeping the score at 2-1 for a long period of time.  In the last 5 minutes, Hannah F scored once more from a rebound levelling the score, at 2-2.  MOTM went to Katie L who had another brilliant game in defence.  She also received DOTD for a ‘Bambi moment.’    Well played to everyone.  Everybody worked for one another and if the ball was lost, determination kicked in.   Squad:  Gemma Fair, Rachel Booton, Katie Lee, Lucy Lloyd, Luci Hooper, Dee Webb, Jenny Woodward, Ruby Ellis, Lou Court, Kate Macintyre, Asia, Ellis, Michelle Burt, Millie Lewis, Hannah...

Ladies 1st XI v Bournemouth 3rd XI

Oct 28, 2013

Bournemouth is never an easy club to travel to as they always fight for every ball and today was no exception. Gillingham started a little slowly and whilst formation shape was good the slick passing and player movement seen in previous weeks eluded us for periods of the game. The first half saw Gillingham defending for long periods and eventually the pressure applied by Bournemouth paid off with them scoring a deserved goal. The second half was very different with Gillingham playing much better hockey and dominated much of the half with more chances created. Good runs from Asia Ellis, together with some excellent defending and link play from Katie Lee put the opposition under pressure. Slightly against the run of play Bournemouth scored a second goal but Gillingham battled back well but desperate defending from Bournemouth denied us a goal. 2-0, first defeat for Gillingham but goal difference keeps us on top of the table. Katie Lee received MOTM and Lou Court worked hard in midfield to create opportunities and chased down any Bournemouth attackers.  DOTD went to Hannah Feltham for arriving late. Young players continue to develop well and as they gain more experience they will be able to confidently put into the game the skills they undoubtedly have.   Squad:  Gemma Fair, Bethan Williamson, Hannah Ayles, Katie Lee, Lucy Lloyd, Luci Hooper, Jen Woodward, Asia Ellis, Ruby Ellis, Sophia Woollard, Lou Court, Hannah Feltham, Izzy...

Ladies 1st XI vs Beaminster 1st XI

Oct 11, 2013

A typically tense game with Beaminster with Gillingham running out winners by 4-2. Gillingham ladies played some very good hockey at times although a little more consistency will help us maintain our 100% win record for the season. Goals from Michelle Burt (2), Hannah Feltham and Millie Lewis all of which followed good periods of pressure from the Gillingham team as a whole. A great team spirit within the team will ultimately lead to better understanding of each others play. Playing hockey in a positive and supportive environment is a real pleasure. Looking forward to next weeks game against Blandford and Sturminster. We are still top of the table with 9 points. Squad: Gemma Fair, Bethan Williamson, Hannah Ayles, Katie Lee, Sarah Feltham, Trudi Carter, Luci Hooper, Ruby Ellis, Lou Court, Millie Lewis, Michelle Burt, Hannah Feltham, Asia Ellis MOTM – Millie Lewis DOTD – Sarah Feltham...
