Mens 1st XI v Southampton Uni 1st XI

Posted on Nov 25, 2015

Southampton University 1XI vs Gillingham 1XI. After a great win against Salisbury, the 1xi were in high spirits. We even travelled in a team bus and were entertained by DJ Charlie’s seventies love songs. (Stevie ‘Wonder’ Way was loving it) The weather was terrible with cold high winds biting through our wimp shirts and team beards. Saying that OT still donned a summer beater – just to prove his manliness. After a very quick warm up on the fast, greasy pitch we were ready for action. We started well, moving the ball at pace and pressuring them into early mistakes. Eddie found himself with space on the right and deliver a quality ball into the D. Steve, who was way out of position, found himself on the other end and his deflection flew high into the top corner. The keeper stranded. In all fairness, it was a lucky deflection but Gillingham deserved their very early lead.  0-1. The away team continued to press and after 10 minutes they were rewarded by another goal. This one deliberate – apparently! Sam Rutter showed immense skill beating the same man 3 times before moving the ball onto Hugh, who cleverly deflected it sending the stranded keeper the wrong way. Very cheeky!  0-2 Throughout the rest of the first half, Gillingham continued to press and missed a several good opportunities. Snoopy lost his footing on top D and gifted them a rare opportunity to score. Luckily the forwards incompetence and Greg’s long limbs came to the rescue. Dick of the day contention though skip!! After inspiring words from the captain at half time, surely Gillingham couldn’t let this slip. Now against the wind, the 1XI suddenly forgot how to pass and stop the ball. Southampton sniffed an opportunity and to their credit they did put us under pressure and forced us into some mistakes. They pulled a goal back early in the second half with a rocket shot, beating the keeper at the near post. Tut tut Greg! 1-2. Gillingham still looked dangerous on the break and aerial balls were finding the forwards in space. Chris had a great opportunity but disappointingly screwed his shot...

Hampshire Trophy Semi-Final

Posted on Apr 11, 2015

This was a game that all were waiting for, GHC 2nd XI v GHC 3rd XI in the semi final of the Trophy, for a fixture in the final on Bank Holiday Monday May 4th in Haslemere. The game started with some pressure from the 3rd XI who were well up for the game only to find a Mike Osborne goal blunt there efforts, this was made even worse when Chris Dean scored a second,  and even more when 3-0 as Patrick Legg scored from a short corner. This didn’t reflect the chances that were created by both teams and the score could have been 4-2 at half time. The second half was fairly calm until a short corner won by the 3rd XI was put away by Dan Knight with an excellent strike, then two minutes later Gary Stevens finished off a scramble in the circle, 3-2 and not over yet. The final goal and almost from the pushback came again from Patrick Legg, quick free hit in the 23yd from Charlie Franklin and finished with a shot in the far corner. Good result and a very good game. Good luck 2nd XI in the...

There was nothing on this game apart from pride, and the opening ten minutes were all GHC as two goals were scored. They relaxed and Lavant got back into the game, the final score was 4-3 to the visitors. Well played the 3rd XI, great season just failing at the end to win promotion, next year!

Mens 2nd XI v COP 3rd XI

Posted on Mar 25, 2015

This was always going to be a tough game, it turned out that way and the league champions title will have to wait another week. Both sides started with fast controlled hockey and it proved that the drag flicking ability of the number 11 in midfield was going to be vital. There were a couple of short corners that were not on target but before long he had his eye in and fired COP into the lead. Mike Osborne got one back from a well worked move but yet again in the 2nd half the number 11 scored again. Again GHC pushed, created chances but just couldn’t find the goal so a 2-1 defeat. Weymouth at home this week to claim the...

Mens 1st XI v New Forest 1st XI

Posted on Mar 25, 2015

This was the game when the result meant the league had been won, but NF were there to be beaten. In the end it was quite comfortable with 7-1 being the final score with George Ledger getting a hat trick of tap ins, Ollie Tremlett two, Jon Lewis one and Christian Bennett from a penalty stroke. That’s the league won, now go and relax at Bournemouth and wait for Division 1 next year. Congratulations to all those that played through out the year, not sure if anybody did every game but I am sure Snoops will correct...
